Top 7 FAQ for Coaches & Specators
#1. Offside - The Offside infraction is called when multiple things happen simultaniously: when a player is in an offside position and receives a pass from another teammate. It is determined when the ball is played, not when the ball gets to the teammate.
#2. Ball Out of Bounds - A ball is considered out of play when it completely crosses the touchline (sideline) or the endline either on the ground or in the air. A ball "on the line" is still in.
#3. Coaching Area - Two coaches maximum per team must remain within 10 yards either way from the halfway line on their side of the field.
#4. Specator Viewing Area - All spectators must remain more than 3 yards from the touchline (sidelines) between the 18-yard lines (penalty area).
#5. Feet Placement on Throw-ins - One or both of you feet must be behind or on the touchline (sideline) when throwing in the ball.
#6. Paid Volunteers - There aren't any. Everyone involved with Region 599 is a volunteer. Please be nice to them.
#7. The Art of Improvement - At the beginning of the season we have rusty spectators who bring their rusty players, that are coached by rusty coaches, with games officiated by rusty referees. Through season-long, high quality training and positive encouragement, we foster an enviornment that inspires great spectators, players, coaches and referees.

REGISTRATION IS COMING - 2012 SEASON
Q) I want to register for the fall 2012 AYSO season. When is registration?
A) Regular registration for AYSO Region 599 is coming this spring in May. More information will be posted soon.
Q) We missed all five registration sessions but want to register. How do I register my child(ren) to play?
A) The first thing you need to do is "pre-register" your child(ren) to play in the AYSO electronic registration system ASAP at www.eayso.org. Next, send us an email using the "Contact Us" page on our website and we will let you know if we can place your child(ren).
Q) How much does it cost?
A) The cost to $100 per player.
Q) What happens if I register to play and then decide to drop? What is your refund policy?
A) If there is any way to help make it work so you can participate, please let us know. Since a significant portion of our registration fees go to pay for uniforms, National fees, training, equipment, and supplies, we do not issue refunds after June 30.

COACHING
Q) I want to coach this season. Are there any administrative issues I need to resolve before the season starts?
A) First thing you will want to do is let the Regional Coach Administrator (Heather Billing) know at walk-in registration that you would like to coach and in which division. Before the season starts, you will need to complete three requirements:
1) Safe Haven Certified (Click here to get started)
2) Complete and submit a 2011 Volunteer Form (eAYSO)
3) Be Coach Trained in your division.
Please contact your divisional coordinator for additional information.
Q) What is Safe Haven and why is it required? How often do I need to be Safe Haven Certified?
A) Safe Haven certification is required for all volunteers who will, in any way, be involved with and in contact with players in the AYSO program. Click here to get started. The Safe Haven course has changed significantly over the years so all volunteers must retake the Safe Haven Certification this season.
Q) I volunteered last year to coach. Didn't I already submit a Volunteer Application or do I need to do it again?
A) Volunteer Forms need to be completed each year you volunteer for any position (including coaches, assistants, team parents, referees, anyone involved with and in contact with players). We submit those volunteer forms to AYSO National who run background checks on every application submitted. Since backgrounds potentially change from year to year, background checks may be necessary every year.
Q) I am coaching in a division lower than my highest level of coach training. For example, I am coaching in the U10 division. I do not have U10 coach training but I do have U12 or above coach training. Do I really need to attend U10 coach training?
A) The short answer is yes. Since the AYSO coach training is comprehensive and specific to a particular age group, you will need to either have already completed or attend coach training in the division you will be coaching this season. This requirement applies to the head coach and any official assistant coach. This is particularly important in the competitive age groups (U10 and above) where the head coach and assistant coach must be age appropriately trained to advance beyond our End of Season Tournament. Please contact your divisional coordinator for additional clarification.

VOLUNTEERING
Q) I recognize that AYSO is an all volunteer organization but I do not have the time to coach. Are there any other smaller jobs that might better fit my schedule?
A) Great question. As a matter of fact, there are many behind the scene jobs that make our organization work. If you are interested in volunteering some time or energy, please let us know.
Q) I have no idea what goes on behind the scenes. Is AYSO Region 599 (San Luis Obispo) an open organization?
A) Absolutely. Our monthly Board Meetings are held at Coast National Bank on Higuera Street in San Luis Obispo at 6:30pm on the 3rd Monday of the month. Board Meetings are open to anyone looking to get involved with or get more information about AYSO. Dinner is served so if you plan to attend, please let us know. Board Meeting Information is listed on the BOARD OF DIRECTORS tab.

FALL 2012 SEASON
Q) When does the regular season start?
A) The first weekend of games for the U6-U14 divisions is September 17th. The regular season runs 9 straight weeks with the final regular season games ending on November 12th. The End of Season Tournament (U10, U12, U14) is November 18-20.
Q) Why haven't I heard from my coach yet?
A) We are currently selecting coaches and forming teams. The Regular Season Coaches Meeting was August 25th (see calendar for more details). The coaches received their equipment, uniforms, roster and player registration forms at that meeting. You will hear from your coach shortly.
Q) What happens if my child(ren)'s practice days and/or times are inconvenient. Can I switch teams?
A) No. We do not make any player changes unless you were inadvertently placed in the wrong division. Examples of incorrect division placement would include if you are a boy placed on a girls team (or vice-versa) or if you made a written request to "play up" and that request was missed.
Q) Scheduling activities during the week is very difficult for me. Is there something, specifically, that I can do to have more control over when and where my child practices?
A) Great question! The answer is absolutely yes. Because coaches are volunteering their time and energy to our program and our kids, they have sole discretion as to what days, what times and what locations they hold practice. As a coach, you will have the flexibility to arrange your practices around your schedule and we will provide you the support and training you need to make it a successful experience for everyone.
Q) Who is responsible for setting up or taking down the goals and corner flags?
A) It is the responsibility of the participating teams to set up and take down the goals each week if those teams have the first or last games of the day on their assigned field. Please plan on arriving a little earlier than normal if your team has the responsibility of setting up your field. Team responsibility is listed on the COACHES tab.
