The AYSO Core Program is another name for AYSO’s Primary program, which is home to the majority of our players and spans from 6U – 18U divisions. With our Philosophies laced throughout, our Core Program is the nation’s leading grassroots soccer program.
What is AYSO Core?
Our Grassroots program is the foundation for all the fun, excitement, and learning that happens on the fields! We have developed our soccer program to be age-appropriate and developmentally challenging based on our Six Philosophies, which are the essence of AYSO’s Mission and Vision and guide all that we do.
- Everyone Plays(R)
- Balanced Teams
- Open Registration
- Positive Coaching
- Good Sportsmanship
- Player Development
What does “Everyone Plays®” mean?
In AYSO, Everyone Plays(R) means that no child spends their soccer experience sitting on the bench. Every child plays at least half of every game. Region 599 San Luis Obispo takes this a step further by requiring that every player participates in at least three quarters of each game before any player may play a fourth quarter.
What are “Balanced Teams”?
In AYSO, teams are balanced to make playing soccer about the experience, not wins or losses. This way, we teach children about good sportsmanship and learning to be the best possible teammate and opponent. By focusing on player development over winning, AYSO is truly child-first and child-focused. This approach makes AYSO one of the finest player development programs dedicated to youth athletics and creating happy, healthy kids.
Can older kids still enjoy AYSO?
Absolutely! AYSO Region 599 offers 16U and 18U programs designed to provide a fun, competitive, and development-focused experience for older players.
Teams are formed by division (16U and 18U are not combined) to support player safety and appropriate levels of play. While the program remains rooted in AYSO’s core philosophies, it offers a more advanced and flexible playing experience for teens.
Depending on the season, teams may participate in inter-area play with other AYSO regions and local recreational programs. Travel may be required, typically within the Central Coast region. Region 599 does not participate in club or competitive league play.
Opportunities for Youth Volunteers
In addition to playing, older players are encouraged to stay involved through volunteer opportunities within the Region.
Youth volunteers may serve as:
- Referees (starting at age 10 and at least two years older than the division they officiate)
- EPIC Buddies, supporting players who benefit from a more individualized and adaptive environment
- Youth Team Assistants, supporting a team under the supervision of a Head Coach
- Field Monitors, assisting with game-day support and communication (must be at least 12 years old and able to communicate clearly and responsibly with referees and board members)
These opportunities allow players to build leadership skills, give back to the community, and stay connected to the game.
